Description

1 item extracted from CO 42/166. Upper Canada (now Ontario, Canada) and United States of America: New York. Map of the mouth of the Niagara River and part of Lake Ontario, showing land heights above the level of the river; lots laid out for land merchants, 1802 and 1809; shops, yards and engineers' quarters; the area of Newark (now Niagara-on-the-Lake) 'wantonly burnt' by the Americans, December 1813; and soundings. Also showing, in detail, the sites of: Fort Niagara, as in February 1815; Fort George, [c1816], with an indication of the area it covered in 1812 and surrounding American entrenchments as in 1813; and a proposed fort at Mississauga Point. Reference tables to the features of each fort. Scale: 1 inch to 200 feet. Compass indicator; south-west at the top. A note states: 'The Soundings and Bar of Niagara are Copied from a Plan surveyed and drawn by Mr. Chillingworth Master of HMS St. Lawrence 1815'. Inset: cross-section through the proposed fort; scale: 1 inch to 20 feet [1:240]. Signed: Lieutenant-Colonel G Nicolls, Commanding Royal Engineers, 8 April 1816.
