Description

Western Europe: GAF claimed on Aug 21 that up to 50% of encircled German elements in France had succeeded in breaking through to the east although losses of equipment were very high; anti-aircraft artillery positions established south of Rouen to protect German unregulated massed traffic at ferry point over Seine; Germans evacuating Troyes in face of Allied advance, Aug 22; Hitler expected sorties and attacks to be made from fortresses and defence zones so that other fronts could be relieved and morale improved; details of German withdrawals on Aug 22; Germans to protect 2 railway lines in the Ardennes serving iron and steel production against terrorist attacks; 3rd Panzer Grenadier Division to transfer by rail from Italian Front to Paris area, refitting in Germany en route; Hitler refuses permission for any German troops to return from Western Europe to Germany; Bordeaux to be evacuated on Sept 3 at earliest, last submarine ready to leave on Aug 31; 19th Army expected to reach an area south of Valence by Aug 30; German plans to destroy their iron and steel works in Nevers area from the air as destruction on ground impossible.

Southern Europe: C-in-C South-west only able to withdraw forces slowly from Southern Front for construction of new western front, 157th Division to leave rearguards at Grenoble and sufficient forces to control roads leading to passes across the Alps; 1,700 men from Peloponnese to be transferred by sea from Patras to Preveza for operation against Zervas bands in western Greece.
