Captured ship: Le Grand Don de Dieu, Antoine Duvigneau master.
Details: French merchant ship with a letter of marque on a voyage from Saint-Domingue (Haiti) to Bordeaux, when captured on 9 September 1778 by the privateer Pitt.
Documents: c 300 personal and business letters (in French, one unopened) from Cap Français, Saint-Domingue (Haiti) for onward delivery to addresses in France. Includes a letter in English from Thomas Brown at Cap Français to his mother in Londonderry, while serving on the brig True American, John Buffinton commander, cruising out of Salem in search of an English prize.
