Captured ship: Le Grand Don de Dieu, Antoine Duvigneau master.
Details: French merchant ship with a letter of marque on a voyage from Saint-Domingue (Haiti) to Bordeaux, when captured on 9 September 1778 by the privateer Pitt.
Documents: c 250 personal and business letters (in French, two unopened) from Cap Français, Saint-Domingue (Haiti) for onward delivery to addresses in France. Enclosed with the letters are: a bill of lading for La Nourrice of Bordeaux, Baudry master (no. 171); and an invoice and bill of lading (marked A) for Le Grand Don de Dieu dated 26 June 1778, giving the name of the master as Rogé Ducasse, Duvigneau's predecessor. There are also a few scraps of paper dated from 1771 to 1775 noting expenses, accounts etc, and a letter dated 1771.
Letter no. 34 is endorsed 'par le navire La Ville Du Cap, Captain Rogé Ducasse', and so possibly may be a stray from the papers of that ship, also captured in 1778 (see HCA 32/474/10 for the main collection of ship's papers and court process for La Ville Du Cap).
