Description

Medical and surgical journal of HMS Majestic for 1 January to 15 May 1857 by Andrew Graham, MD, Surgeon, during which time the said ship was employed in Mediterranean.

Folio 1: A list of pension certificates granted on board HMS Majestic for 1 January to 15 May 1857 (name and details follow). John Vile; aged 26,; ship's pay book number 591; ordinary seaman; date of the certificate, 16 March 1857; nature of injury, wounded on 6 November 1856 at Buyukdere by the discharge of a gun, whilst exercising manned and armed boats. The upper part of the face was considerably burnt, and there was a wound of the upper eyelid of the right eye. Severe inflammation supervened. A small ulcer over the upper part of the cornea of the right eye continued for some time, which healed, but a nebula extends over the pupil and completely obscures the sight. The sight of the left eye is quite restored.

Folios 3-6: Robert Jew, aged 30, caulker; case number 1; disease or hurt, orchitis and rheumatism. Put on sick list, 21 September 1856 at sea. Discharged 19 January 1857 to HMS Medina for a passage to Malta Hospital.

Folios 6-10: Charles Atterburg, aged 19, supernumerary boy; case number 2; disease or hurt, phthisis. Put on sick list, 14 October 1856 at Buyukdere. Died.

Folio 10: John Vile, aged 26, ordinary seaman; case number 3; disease or hurt, wound of eye. Put on sick list, 6 November 1856 at Buyukdere. Discharged 7 March 1857 to duty.

Folios 11-12: Thomas Elson, aged 38, coxswain of the cutter; case number 4; disease or hurt, palpitation of heart. Put on sick list, 8 November 1856 at Buyukdere. Discharged 19 January 1857 to HMS Medina for a passage to Malta Hospital.

Folio 12: William Fitzgerald, aged 22, ordinary seaman; case number 5; disease or hurt, stricture of the urethra. Put on sick list, 23 November 1856 at Buyukdere. Discharged 19 January 1857 to HMS Medina for a passage to Malta Hospital.

Folios 12-14: Charles Cates, aged 36, marine; case number 6; disease or hurt, pneumonia. Put on sick list, 9 December 1856 at Buyukdere. Discharged 18 January 1857 to duty.

Folios 14-16: James Riley, aged 30, marine; case number 7; disease or hurt, bronchitis. Put on sick list, 10 December 1856 at Buyukdere. Discharged 19 January 1857 to HMS Medina for a passage to Malta Hospital.

Folios 16-17: Mr Vivian, aged 17, master's certificate; case number 8; disease or hurt, pneumonia. Put on sick list, 12 December 1856 at Buyukdere. Discharged 12 January 1857 to duty.

Folios 17-19: John Murphy, aged 20, ordinary seaman; case number 9; disease or hurt, pneumonia. Put on sick list, 26 January 1857 at Buyukdere. Died 19 February 1857.

Folios 19-20: Martin Murphy, aged 24, able seaman; case number 10; disease or hurt, wound of head, struck on the head by a large block of about 78lbs, which fell from the mizzen top a height of about 45 feet. Put on sick list, 22 March 1857 at sea. Discharged 2 April 1857 to the Military Hospital at Gibraltar.

Folio 21: James Whettingstall, aged 42, able seaman; case number 11; disease or hurt, ulcer on the external part of the left leg. Put on sick list, 26 August 1856 at sea. Discharged 7 May 1856 to Melville Hospital.

Folios 21-22: Stephen Pressnall, aged 23, ordinary seaman; case number 12; disease or hurt, syphilis. Put on sick list, 28 January 1857 at Buyukdere. Discharged 7 May 1857 to Melville Hospital.

Folios 22-23: James Wallis, aged 21, ordinary seaman; case number 13; disease or hurt, catarrh. Put on sick list, 6 April 1857. Discharged 7 May 1857 to Melville Hospital.

Folio 23: Alfred Clarke, aged 20, ordinary seaman; case number 14; disease or hurt, ulcer. Put on sick list, 30 April 1857 at sea. Discharged 7 May 1857 to Melville Hospital.

Folio 23: Reuben Stolley, aged 18, boy 1st class; case number 15; disease or hurt, phlegmon. Put on sick list, 4 May 1857 at sea. Discharged 7 May 1857 to Melville Hospital.

Folio 24: A nosological synopsis of the sick book kept during the period of this journal.

Folio 25: Table 2: A list of men who during the period of this journal, have received wounds or hurts which may disqualify them for the public service, or subsequently in any way interfere with their earning a livelihood.
