Description

Journal of HMS Orpheus by William Maybank, Surgeon, for 29 October 1805 to 29 October 1806, during which time the ship was employed in the North Sea and West Indies station. Reports of two men struck by lightning on passage to Jamaica in 1806

Folio 1: Edward Davis, aged 34, seaman taken ill in the North Sea; sick or hurt, afflicted for some month with cough difficulty of breathing and spilling of pus with blood; taken ill on [29] October 1805, discharged 4 February 1806 to hospital at Yarmouth.

Folio 2: James Hoskins, aged 29, seaman taken ill in the North Sea; sick or hurt, great pain in the right side increasing when inspiration short cough with difficulty of breathing; taken ill on 30 January 1806, discharged 6 February 1806 to hospital.

Folio 3: John Cooper, aged 24, seaman taken ill at sea; sick or hurt, enlargement of the knee joint; date taken ill [?], discharged 10 February 1806 to hospital at Yarmouth.

Folio 3: Danl [Daniel] Walker, aged 34, marine, taken ill at sea; sick or hurt, epilepsy; date taken ill [?], discharged 30 March 1806 to hospital at Yarmouth.

Folio 3: John Smith, aged 30, seaman, taken ill at sea; sick or hurt, diseased shoulder joint from scrophula long standing; date taken ill [?], discharged 30 March 1806 to hospital at Yarmouth.

Folio 3: Thomas Northover, aged 16, boy, taken ill at sea; sick or hurt, consumption; taken ill on 16 May 1806, sent 20 May 1806 to hospital at Yarmouth.

Folio 3: Edward Collins, aged 24; sick or hurt, ulcer leg of long standing; date taken ill [?], sent 22 July 1806 to hospital ship Sheerness.

Folio 3: John Manding, aged 40; sick or hurt, ulcer leg of long standing; date of taken ill [?], sent 22 July 1806 to hospital ship Sheerness.

Folios 3-4: John Pearce, aged 45, marine, taken ill at sheerness; sick or hurt, left side clavicle fractured within an inch of its articulation with the scapular; taken ill on 23 July 1806, discharged 14 August 1806 to duty.

Folios 4-5: Daniel Fergussan, Aged 23, seaman, taken ill at sheerness; sick or hurt, received a blow upon the left arm by which the ulna was fractured; taken ill on 25 July 1806, discharged 22 August 1806 to duty.

Folios 5-6: Robert Godshill, aged 25, marine, taken ill at Portsmouth; sick or hurt, venereal infection about 6 days ago three chancres upon the upper part of the glans penis; taken ill on 26 July 1806, discharged 2 August 1806 to duty.

Folio 6: John Wight, aged 27, seaman, taken ill at Portsmouth; sick or hurt, violent pain of the throat and inflammatory appearance in the posterior arch of the palate; taken ill on 26 July 1806, discharged 5 August 1806 to duty.

Folio 7: George Newland, aged 18, marine, taken ill at Portsmouth; sick or hurt, venereal infection about 10 days ago at Chatam [Chatham] barracks has a bubo in each groin without having any other symptom; taken ill on 28 July 1806, discharged 12 August 1806 to duty.

Folios 7-8: John Eves, aged 19, seaman, taken ill at Portsmouth; sick or hurt, pain of the posterior part of the elbow joint of the left arm; taken ill on 28 July 1806, discharged 5 August 1806 to duty.

Folio 8: James Galloway, aged 28, seaman, taken ill at sea; sick or hurt, three small ulcers on the middle and anterior part of the leg which discharge a thin [?]; taken ill on 3 August 1806, discharged 11 August 1806 to duty.

Folio 8: Thomas Coles, aged 28, seaman, taken ill at sea; sick or hurt, ulcer which discharged a [fetid] pus about the middle and anterior part of the leg; taken ill on 5 August 1806, discharged 15 August 1806 to duty.

Folios 8-9: John Cooper, aged 20, seaman, taken ill at sea; sick or hurt, severe pain of the right side and head; taken ill on 12 August 1806, discharged 19 August 1806 to duty.

Folio 9: George Howard, aged 24, armourer mate, taken ill at sea; sick or hurt, pain of the head nausea loss of appetite tongue foul and considerable thirst; taken ill on 20 August 1806, discharged 22 August 1806 to duty.

Folio 9: William Wilson, aged 22, seaman, taken ill at sea; sick or hurt, inflammation of the left eye; taken ill on 26 August 1806, discharged 31 August 1806 to duty.

Folios 9-10: Charles Hay, aged 22, seaman, taken ill at sea; sick or hurt, swelling of the right testicle in consequent of getting wetted he has previously [afflicted] gonorrhoea; taken ill on 2 September 1806, discharged 7 September 1806 to duty.

Folio 10: James Wimbleton, aged 23, seaman, taken ill at sea; sick or hurt, leg and ankles swelled and fit upon pressure with some degree of pain; taken ill on 10 September 1806, discharged 26 September 1806 to duty.

Folio 10: John English, aged 33, boatswain, taken ill at sea; sick or hurt, pain of the throat and inflammation the tonsils appear swelled; taken ill on 24 September 1806, discharged 26 September 1806 to duty.

Folios 10-11: Robert Field, aged 44, seaman, taken ill at sea; sick or hurt, pain of the left side cough and dyspnoea; taken ill on 26 September 1806, discharged 5 October 1806 to duty.

Folio 11: George Green, aged 23, seaman, taken ill at Barbados; sick or hurt, severe pain aggravated at intervals at the lower part of abdomen; taken ill on 30 September 1806, discharged 2 October 1806 to duty.

Folios 11-12: Samuel Gardiner, aged 22, seaman, taken ill on passage to Jamaica; sick or hurt, struck with a flash of lightning that deprived him of sight and burning pain the eyes; taken ill on 6 October 1806, discharged 11 October 1806 to duty.

Folio 12: Michael MacKlanghlin, aged 50, gunner, taken ill on passage to Jamaica; sick or hurt, struck by lightning on the quarter deck and found he was deprived of sight and hearing in the similar manner as Samuel Gardiner's case; taken ill on 6 October 1806, invalided 17 October 1806.

Folio 12: James Lennard, aged 30, carpenter's mate, taken ill at Jamaica; sick or hurt, legs swelled and [?] on pressure; taken ill on 15 October 1806, discharged 22 October 1806 to duty.

Folio 12: Henry Clement, aged 29, seaman, taken ill at Jamaica; sick or hurt, pain at the lower part of the abdomen; taken ill on 20 October 1806, discharged 22 October 1806 to duty.

Folio 13: Henry Sherble, aged 45, seaman, taken ill at [Jamaica]; sick or hurt, received a shark bite above the exterior malleolus of the foot; taken ill on 24 October 1806, [discharged] 29 October 1806 to duty.
