Description

Medical journal of the Parland emigration ship, from 24 May to 7 October 1838 by David Ross, surgeon and superintendent, during which time the said ship was employed in the emigration service to New South Wales.

Folios 1-3: sick book of the Government Emigration ship Parland, (names and details follow):

  • Folio 2: sick book of the Government Emigration ship 'Parland', which sailed from Loch Foyle on the 3rd June 1838 with 294 emigrants and arrived in Port Jackson on 3rd October 1838 with 295 emigrants. Births during the voyage 4. Deaths during the voyage, 3, under 6 years of age. Male adult emigrants, 96. Female adult emigrants, 90. Children under 10 years of age, 108. Total embarked, 294. Signed: David Rodd, surgeon and superintendent.
  • Folio 3: case no 1, Johnston Collins, aged 3, emigrant; sick or hurt, variola; put on sick list 9 June 1838, discharged 24 June 1838 cured.

Folio 4: case no 1, [Johnston] Collins, aged 3; taken ill at sea; sick or hurt, variola; put on sick list 9 June 1838, discharged 24 June 1838 cured.

Folio 5: case no 2, James Bradley, aged 2; taken ill at sea; sick or hurt, variola; put on sick list 20 June 1838, discharged 4 July 1838 cured.

Folio 5: case no 3, Jane McLauchlan, aged 9; taken ill at sea; sick or hurt, vulnus, a dry cask was dropped down the fore hatchway into the hold and this girl was struck by it upon the head, which it was reported that the child was killed, on examination the child naturally of a florid complexion looked pale but showed evident signs of sense and sensibility; put on sick list 27 June 1838, discharged 10 July 1838 cured.

Folios 5-6: case no 4, John Gwin, aged 41; taken ill at sea; sick or hurt, a farm labourer, subject of severe attacked of sea sickness; put on sick list 3 July 1838, discharged 22 July 1838 cured.

Folio 7: case no 5, Mrs Doran, aged 40; taken ill at sea; sick or hurt, parturition, seized with labour pains at 11 am. at 2.30 pm was safely delivered of a female child; put on sick list 24 June 1838, discharged 8 July 1838 off sick list.

Folio 7: case no 6, [Charles] McLauchlan, aged 9; taken ill at sea; sick or hurt, contusion, was hit by a coil of rope that was dropped into the hold which struck him on the brow, considerable tumor on the forehead but saw no cause for alarm; put on sick list 26 June 1838, discharged 4 July 1838.

Folios 7-8: case no 7, Robert Boles, aged 2; taken ill at sea; sick or hurt, marasmus, of very delicate constitution and the parents state that his brothers died of a decline when about the same age; put on sick list 28 June 1838, died 17 July 1838 at 10 am, after the earnest request of the parents a coffin was made and at 4 pm. the funeral service was said when his body was committed to the deep all the emigrants and ship's company were present and many of the former seemed to shudder at the deposition of a human body in a world of waters when they had so often seen of late the voracious shark and other inhabitants of the [deep?] to which they had been until very late total strangers.

Folios 8-9: case no 8, Mrs Doran, aged 40; taken ill at sea; sick or hurt, abscess Mamma.; put on sick list 31 July 1838, discharged 17 August 1838 cured.

Folio 9: case no 9, Mrs Collins, aged 24; taken ill at sea; sick or hurt, parturition, safely delivered of a female child; put on sick list 10 august 1838, discharged 24 August 1838 off the list.

Folio 9: case no 10, Jane Vaughan, aged 6 months; taken ill at sea; sick or hurt, marasmus; put on sick list 10 august 1838, died 10 August 1838.

Folio 9: case no 11, Mrs Garvie, aged 26; taken ill at sea; sick or hurt, parturition, safely delivered of a female child; put on sick list 13 august 1838, discharged 1 September 1838 from hospital.

Folios 9-11: case no 12, Mrs Dinsmore, aged 37; taken ill at sea; sick or hurt, febris catarrhus; put on sick list 22 August 1838, discharged 1 October 1838 cured.

Folio 11: case no 13, Moriah Dinsmore, aged 6; taken ill at sea; sick or hurt, marasmus; put on sick list 22 August 1838, died 2 September 1838 at 10.30 am. F

Folio 12: case no 14, Hugh Reid, aged 22; taken ill at sea; sick or hurt, synocha, this patient and his wife aged 20 were simultanously taken ill during the night with symptoms of pyrexia; put on sick list 22 August 1838, discharged 1 October 1838 cured.

Folio 12: case no 15, Mrs Harper, aged 21; taken ill at sea; sick or hurt, parturition, and was safely devivered of a male child at 10 am; put on sick list 1 October 1838, discharged 7 October 1838 cured.
