Description

Medical journal of the convict ship Thomas Arbuthnot for 30 November 1846 to 8 May 1847 by Henry Baker, RN, surgeon, during which time the said ship was employed in carrying prisoners to Port Philip.

Folio 2: Henry Perkins, aged 21, prisoner; case number 2; sick or hurt, phthisis incipiens; put on sick list, 14 December 1846; discharged 31 December 1846 to the York hulk at Portsmouth.

Folio 3: James Bowen, aged 20, private, 96th Regiment; case number 3; sick or hurt, epilepsy, had two severe fits while on board through which 'his intellect was somewhat impaired', totally unfit for service; put on sick list, 7 January 1847; discharged 7 January 1847 to the hospital at Portsmouth.

Folio 3: Edward Westbury, aged 18, Parkhurst boy; case number [not stated]; sick or hurt, phthisis pulmonalis, no post mortem carried out 'but he appears to have had abcesses on the lungs a small one of which had burst before he came on board'; put on sick list, 25 January 1847; died 16 April 1847.

Folio 4: A nosological synopsis of the sick book.

Folio 5: Surgeon's general remarks. The total number of days that the Guard and prisoners were under my care was 155. During which time there was very little sickness amongst them. One of the prisoners a Parkhurst boy, died of disease of the lungs when within 10 days sail of our destination, and another Parkhurst boy fractured the right clavicle by a fall, these were the only two cases of any consequence that occurred during the voyage. They all landed in good health on 9 May 1847. None being sent to the hospital.
