Description

Medical and surgical journal of HM hired convict ship Atlas from 29 March to 28 August 1833 by John Love, surgeon, during which time the said ship was employed on a passage to Van Dieman's Land.

Folios 1-6: Thomas David, aged 24, prisoner received on board from the Discovery hulk; case number 1; disease or hurt, cholera. Put on sick list, 12 April 1833. Died 15 August 1832.

Folio 7: Joseph Pitman, aged 22, prisoner; case number 2; disease or hurt, diarrhoea. Put on sick list, 13 April 1833. Discharged 18 April 1833 cured.

Folios 8-9: William Hewitt, aged 27, prisoner; case number 3; disease or hurt, diarrhoea. Put on sick list, 14 April 1833. Discharged 20 April 1833 cured.

Folios 10-12: John Wines, aged 21, prisoner; case number 4; disease or hurt, pneumonia. Put on sick list, 18 April 1833. Discharged 9 May 1833 cured.

Folios 13-14: John Harding, aged 36, prisoner; case number 5; disease or hurt, scorbutus. Put on sick list, 10 June 1833. Discharged 4 July 1833 cured.

Folio 15: Anthony Hake, aged 21, prisoner; case number 6; disease or hurt, scorbutus. Put on sick list, 19 June 1833. Discharged 28 June 1833 cured.

Folio 16: William Taylor, aged 24, private of the guard; case number 7; disease or hurt, mania. Put on sick list, 21 June 1833. Discharged 28 June 1833 to duty.

Folios 17-19: John Carroll, aged 30, guard; case number 8; disease or hurt, phthisis. Put on sick list, 28 July 1833 at sea. Died 21 August 1833 to duty.

Folios 20-21: Charles Thorn, aged 23, prisoner; case number 9; disease or hurt, scorbutus. Put on sick list, 2 August 1833 at sea. Discharged 26 August 1833 to Hobart Town hospital.

Folios 22-23: M Mahon, aged 27, private of the guard; case number 10; disease or hurt, phthisis. Put on sick list, 4 August 1833 at sea. Discharged 26 August 1833 to Hobart Town military hospital.

Folio 23: a numerical abstract of the medical cases mentioned in the journal.

Folio 24-26: Surgeon's general remarks. Received at Woolwich on 11 April 1833, 50 convicts from the Justicia hulk; 30 from Ganymede and 20 from Discovery. At Devonport 23 April 1833 received 100 convicts from Captivity hulk. Making total of 200.
