CHES 38
1244-1830
The series includes a wide variety of books and rolls belonging mainly to the Exchequer of Chester, the Courts of Great Sessions of Chester and Flint, the Cheshire quarter sessions and the County Court. The great majority of the records are of a legal nature, and a significant number relate to Flintshire rather than Cheshire.
The main sub-series include, from the Exchequer, summonses, mainly from the 14th and 15th centuries, books of recognisances and sequestration filings. Individual items include an early register of writs from the reign of Richard II; what are believed to be the only surviving portions of the so-called 'Domesday' roll of Cheshire, compiled in the early 13th century; the quo warranto file of the 1499 Cheshire eyre; two enclosure awards; justices' licence books and recognisances; and some lists of prisoners in gaols.
A more detailed cataloguing of this series than can be undertaken at present is needed, since some of the items in the series which are not currently described individually are potentially of significant interest.
Significations of excommunication are in C 85
