Plan of the harbour entrance at Ostend, Flanders (now in Belgium) showing scheme to run a chain across it as a check against small vessels, also the position of the capstan and capstan house. Scale: 4.5 inches to 200 yards. Compass indicator. The plan is accompanied by an unsigned note on a separate sheet, which begins: 'This Plan of Ostend is drawn from recollection at the desire of Mr. Nepean to determine how far it may be proper to have a chain run across the Harbour to prevent a Coup de Main on that side ...'. An attack on the port was envisaged in 1798, and the absence of the honorific title, Sir Evan, indicates that the plan was made before Nepean received his baronetcy in 1802.
