Map of West Africa. 'Stanford's map of the Guinea Coast ... including the whole course of the Niger and shewing Ashanti and its surroundings 1873'. Reference table to British, French and Portuguese colonies and protectorates and to the Liberian Republic. Scale:1 inch to about 100 miles. Published by Edward Stanford, 13 October 1873. Manuscript additions indicate French progress in occupying areas and seeking concessions up to 1883. Written above the upper margin: 'All West African Maps are defective. The Senegal and the Gambia [rivers] are incorrectly laid down, the former being represented as the more important of the two.'
