Description

Short title: Copley v Braithwaite.

Plaintiff(s): John Copley and his wife Beatrice.

Defendant(s): Edward Braithwaite.

Subject of depositions: Water corn-mill in Hawkshead, called Hawkshead Milne, formerly belonging to Nathaniel Nicholson (grandfather of the plaintiff Beatrice) and lately to Daniel Nicholson (plaintiff's father), to whomBeatrice and her sister Judith Carus (married to George Carus) are co-heiresses. Touching the custom of "suit and soake" alias "sock" alias "soken" (i.e. grinding corn, etc) to the mills due from the inhabitants of the townships and villages of Colthonn, Hawkeshead, Londthwaite Highwray, Lowwray, and Tockhouse, (Lancashire) to the mills. [Allan Nicholson and Susan Nicholson his administratrix, Mr Ditchfield, Mr Highlord, Mr Clarke, Mr Mosse, James Braithwaite, Chas. Satterthwaite, William Satterthwaite, and James Rigg, are mentioned].
