Oaths legislation: proposal to consolidate laws relating to election of members. Sir James Graham formally refusesoffice and gives his reasons (fs. 79-82). J.R's Welsh visit: addresses of welcome and Eisteddfod programme, Portmadoc. Queen's visit to Lancashire: proposal to raise Manchester to city status. Fox Maule at Balmoral (fs. 105-6). Question of a "transatlantic packet" (fs. 85-6): Irish claims. Appointments, political and civil, sought and bestowed. Correspondence: B. Hawes; G. C. Lewis; Sir C. Wood; Lord Palmerston; Sir. B. Heywood; Sir John Potter; Sir James Graham; Fox Maule; Sir F. Baring and others. Foreign affairs: Prussia: Lord Palmerston considers the Queen has adopted Prince Albert's pro-German opinions (fs. 9-10) "..... the Germans are quite able to take care of themselves" (fs. 95-6). Foreign affairs: Cuba: Admiral Berkeley reports failure of Lopez expedition. Foreign affairs: Slave trade suppression: Lord Palmerston advocates pressure on African chiefs at Lagos and Dahomey to expel traders from their territories.
