Description

'Plan of the Proposed Cheltenham Oxford and London and Birmingham Union Railway 1836 ....': booklet containing a map (title page and 17 sheets) and section (title page and 8 sheets) of the route. Map to scale: 4 inches to 1 mile, with enlarged portion to scale: 16 inches to 1 mile; section to scale: 4 inches to 1 mile (horizontal), 1 inch to 100 feet (horizontal). Compass indicators. By Captain W S Moorsom, Engineer; engraved and printed by Johnson, High Street, Cheltenham. First title page inscribed: 'The Rt. Honble Lord Churchill' [Francis Almeric Spencer, 1st Baron Churchill, a Director of the Great Western Railway]. A Great Western Railway Central Record Office label numbered 'Plan 94' is affixed to the back cover.

The limp cloth covers are coming away from the lining papers and all the pages are damaged at the edge. Sheet 3 of the section is missing; the upper right-hand corner of several sheets has been torn away. There is evidence that the front cover once bore a title label but this is now missing. A reference book to the numbered properties shown on the plan was presumably printed to accompany the map but this has not survived.
