Description

Transcripts of grievances and proceedings in the dispute as to the right of election of a prior of the cathedral priory of St. Swithun's, Winchester (Hampshire):

  • 1. Touching the principles which prevail by right of the monks and chapter of the church of Winchester - concerning the election of Andrew of London as prior, confirmed by Boniface [of Savoy], archbishop of Canterbury, but overturned in preference of another by John [Gervais], bishop of Winchester, in contravention of the provisions made by William Gyffard, Henry [of Blois], brother of King Stephen, and Pope Innocent IV, and in contravention of the convent's recognised right to elect;
  • 2. The grievances that have arisen in the church for lack of a head of the house - including that manors and churches which have been withdrawn and withheld from the convent, of which they were previously seised by the authority of the bishopric of Winchester: Burghclere (Burclere), Ashmansworth (Esmeresworthe), Woodhay (Wydehae), South Stoneham (Stanham), Horton, Bitterne (Biterne), Merdon (Merdone), Hursley (Hurselyghe), Standene, East Meon (Estmime), Wargrave (Weregrave), the pasture of Compton, £20 of cloth from the fair of St. Giles beneath the castle, 10 marks of cloth from the house of St. Cross, Winchester, cloth of Chilcumb (Chiltecumbe) estimated to be worth 2000 m. per annum; churches: Elendone, Littleton (Liteltone), Morestead (Morstede), Chilcomb, Whitchurch (Album Monasterium), Compton, Wyke, Poilaunde, ?Blunsdon (Blundune), Hinton Ampner (Hynetune), Ham (Hamme), Enford (Eneford), Patney (Patenee), Overton (Ouertune), Worston (Worstone), Hamtone, Easton (Estone), Avington (Auyntone), Wonston (Wonsintone), Michelmarsh (Michelemareys), Houghton Drayton (Hoctune), Meon (Menes), Martyr Worthy (Wordye), Hursley, South Stoneham, Hanton (Hampton'), Ashmansworth, Woodhay, Ecchinswell (Echeneswulle), East Meon (Estmene), Wargrave (Berkshire);
  • 3. Petition of the convent following initial arbitration;
  • 4. Articles outlining the dispute, detailing the offences of the bishop of Wnichester in infringing the liberties enjoyed by the priory, including the rights to fish and hunt in the manors of Droxford (Drokenesford), Exton (Extone), West Meon (Westmene), Prior's Barton (Berthon') and elsewhere, and rights relating to pannage, timber and parkland;
  • 5. Requests for restoration of fees withdrawn from them with arrears - £20 of annual rent from the fair of St. Giles, withdrawn by W[illiam] Raleigh, bishop of Winchester; 10 marks of annual rent from the house of St. Cross, Winchester; the churches of Droxford (Droken'), Havant (Hafonte) and Crondal, with their chapels, assigned to sustain the lights in the priory church; the church of Elendone, similarly assigned for the writing of books and repairs to the organ; the mill of Floudstok;
  • 6. (m. 1d) Petition of the chapter of St. Swithun's - transcript of the letter of Nicholas de Ely, bishop of Winchester, concerning the arbitration of William of Southampton, prior provincial of the friars Preachers in England, and Antony Bek, archdeacon of Durham, and restoring all manors and tenements, rights and possessions, to be held freely without oppression, together with all liberties, services and customs.
