The Council for the Central Laboratory of the Research Councils (CCLRC) was formed in April 1995 as an executive body to oversee the work of the Rutherford Appleton Laboratory, Chilton, Oxfordshire, and the Daresbury Laboratory, Warrington, Cheshire, which were merged under the royal charter that created the Council.
The two laboratories had previously been working in tandem as a department of the Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council.
The merger of the two laboratories was seen as furthering the objects of the Science and Technology Act 1965 with regard to the promotion and support of scientific research.
CCLRC is responsible for supporting high quality scientific and engineering research (including the field of particle physics), and overseeing the transference of innovative technology into everyday use. It is also required to promote public understanding of science, engineering, and technology.
The two laboratories, along with the Chilbolton Observatory in Hampshire, for which the CCLRC also has responsibility, provide central facilities for about twelve thousand research scientists from British universities and elsewhere.
The Council consists of a chairman, a chief executive, and between four and eleven other members, all of whom are appointed by the Chancellor of the Duchy of Lancaster.
On 1 April 2007 CCLRC merged with the Particle Physics and Astronomy Research Council (PPARC) to form the Science and Technology Facilities Council.
