In 1929 Sir Horace Wilson was appointed Chief Industrial Adviser to the government. He worked within the Board of Trade to give effect to the government's offer to co-operate more actively with industry to develop and reorganise its production and distribution. He was to co-ordinate the government's activities concerning the reorganisation of industry falling within the scope of the Board of Trade, the Ministry of Labour and the Department of Overseas Trade. In March 1932 his office staff and functions were absorbed by the Industries and Manufactures Department and he himself continued to work within the board until 1935, when he moved to the Treasury. In 1939 his title was discontinued when he became Permanent Secretary to the Treasury.
