The Roads Division was created in 1968 with the new Welsh Office. It had responsibility in Wales for: road transport policy; oversight of motorway and trunk road new construction and improvement; land acquisition and management; noise insulation and compensation claims; contracts and agreements; general standards; signing; lighting; communications; technical approval of bridges; road safety; trunk road forward programme; planning; traffic studies and statistics; control of development near trunk roads; advice on road and bridge matters, and responsibility for major road improvements.
It worked closely with the Professional and Consultative Staff Unit who were responsible for the practical work.
