Description

Despatches from Acting Governor William Smith (items 1-15) and Governor Sir William Lumley (items 16-29) as well as letters from various offices (government departments and other organisations) and individuals on matters related to Bermuda. Despatches are described at item level; correspondence from officers and individuals is not. Correspondents and subjects for offices and individuals are as follows:

Offices:

  • Admiralty (punishment of persons harbouring or encouraging deserters from British naval ships, food to be provided to convicts on arrival at Ireland Island, rations of convicts on hulks in England, duty on American imports, conveyance of Sir William and Lady Lumley, detachment for duty in the Dockyard and on the Antelope, employment of convicts on naval works);
  • Home Office (printed copy of 'An Act for authorising the employment of labour, in the Colonies, of male convicts under sentence of transportation', dismissal of proposition to send convicts to Sierra Leone and Upper and Lower Canada rather than Bermuda);
  • Navy Office (conveyance of Sir William Lumley);
  • James Stephen, legal adviser (lack of law for punishing persons harbouring deserters from British naval ships, Governor and Council's appropriation of certain duties, dispute concerning the issue of a proclamation, action taken by Governor Lumley against Churchwardens Basham and Till, 1775 Act regulating the payment of the clergy and for the letting of pews);
  • Treasury (payment of the Governor Smith's private secretary).
