Administrative / biographical background

The Local Government Boundary Commission for England was appointed in November 1972 under the provisions of the Local Government Act 1972. The Act created separate Commissions for England and Wales to review both boundaries of local authorities and those of their internal electoral divisions. Implementation of any recommended changes was the responsibility of the Secretary of State for the Environment. The Commission ceased to exist in 1992, its duties being taken up by the newly created Local Government Commission for England.
