Selection and destruction information

Annual reports of the Council and minutes of its subcommittees were kept, as were any reports which were not likely to survive amongst the records of the establishments which submitted papers to the council.

Administrative / biographical background

The Electronics Research Council was set up shortly after the formation of the Ministry of Aviation in 1959 with the intention of separating out issues on electronics and allied subjects from those other scientific concerns considered by the Scientific Advisory Council. The council was served by six committees: Air Traffic Control & Navigation; Radar; Communication; Propagation Aerials & Waveguides; Optics & Infra-Red; and Solid State Physics & Devices.

The council made annual reports to the minister, although it could submit recommendations to the minister at any time.

The council was wound up sometime after 1980.
