Towards the end of World War II the War Cabinet Scientific Advisory Committee inaugurated a scheme which required government departments to prepare specialist monographs on the scientific and technical research upon which they had been engaged during the war. The complete results, which were to include extramural research also, were intended to form a comprehensive permanent record of British war-time effort in science and technology.
In April 1946 the legal amalgamation of the two ministries was effected, resulting in the formation of one overall Ministry of Supply. The preparatory work on the two series continued, separately, within the new department until 1948, when it was considered that sufficient monograph material had been compiled to fulfill the requirements of the original War Cabinet directive.
