These Western Circuit gaol books relate mainly to proceedings under commissions of gaol delivery and contain details of prisoners sent for trial, usually with a note of the plea, verdict and sentence. There are also some entries under commissions of oyer and terminer. Included in the series is the volume containing the names of prisoners tried by Judge Jeffreys at the 'Bloody Assizes' following the Monmouth rebellion in 1685.
