Description

Germany - Reports on damage to monuments.

Letter from Monuments, Fine Arts and Archives [MFA and A] director Douglas Cooper to James Mann, Honorary secretary of the Macmillan Committee, enclosing a copy of a special Photo Interpretation Report on the extent of damage to certain historic monuments in some 70 German towns, submitted to the MFA and A branch of the British Element of the Control Commission for Germany by Australian Captain Everett P Lesley, dated September-October 1944. Provides a detailed list of damaged monuments listed in alphabetical order according to their geographical location, with brief remarks on their state of conservation, their reference number on the New York Frick Art Reference Library map, their sortie number and the number of the related photographic prints [not included in the piece].

Letter from James G Mann to Sir Leonard Woolley thanking him for sending the enclosed special report on the Augustusburg Schloss in Bruhl compiled by the MFA and A section at G-5 [Civil Affairs division of the US Army], dated March-April 1945. Includes a detailed description of the damage to the castle, 'one of the most important protected monuments of the Rhineland', in the air raids of October-December 1944 and March 1945. Also records the 'remedial and protective actions' undertaken and the work accomplished as of March 1945.

Two letters from Sir Leonard Woolley, Archaeological Adviser to the War Office, to J Mann and Miss Clay for the Macmillan Committee enclosing two reports on the damage to buildings and monuments in the cities of Aachen and Trier, dated May-September 1945. The Aachen report describes the extent of the very serious damage to the historic buildings of Aachen both through bombing attacks, which 'have destroyed the greater part of all the buildings of architectural, historical and artistic value', and through later military operations, which 'resulted in additional heavy damage to [...] all its important historical monuments', with the exception of its Cathedral. Lists the damage suffered by several churches, buildings and museums in Aachen, with brief references to their history and contents. The Trier report provides an overview of the damage to churches and monuments in the city centre of Trier. Records the state of conservation of Trier's Roman remains, which despite the heavy bombing of the city 'escaped any serious damage', and of the mediaeval monuments, which 'suffered severely'. Also includes a short list of damaged monuments in small towns 'of exceptional architectural and historical character' and in 'larger towns with important monuments' in Germany, and to monasteries, castles and cities with important monuments in Austria.
