Custodial history (Describes where and how the record has been held from creation to transfer to The National Archives)
- The cards were originally created by Ministry staff for their own use. The card index was later in the custody of English Heritage for some years before being passed to The National Archives. A project to use the information from the cards to improve the catalogue entries for the plans and drawings took place between 2008 and 2013. The card index was accessioned as a set of records in 2026.

The Office of Works and later Ministry of Works under their various names maintained sets of plans and drawings of a variety of buildings and sites that came within their remit, in parallel with their registered files. It is not known exactly when this card index to the plans and drawings was made or which Ministry staff were responsible for it.
