Description

Captured ship: St Jacob of Copenhagen (master Daniel Laurensen Turmand) (owners Frederick Muller and Nicholas Muller).

History: a Danish merchant ship (flyboat, 100 tons / 40 lasts, 10 men), bound from Bordeaux to Copenhagen, laden with brandy, molasses, prunes, wine and yellow ochre; driven into Plymouth by contrary winds, and seized in port on 30 January / 9 February 1695/1696 by HMS St Paul (John Mitchell commanding).

Part of the larger collection of papers in HCA 32/1889A, document level descriptions continued from HCA 32/1889A/1 and continue in HCA 32/1889A/3.

Ship's Papers in four bundles covering several voyages of the St Jacob from 1694-1696, numbered SP 1/1-SP 1/3, SP 2/1-SP 2/21, SP 3/1-SP 3/15, SP 4/1-SP 4/53 [with gaps]:

  • Bundle 1, papers found loose on the ship, SP 1/1-SP 1/3 in Dutch and Danish:
    • SP 1/1-SP 1/2: two notes promising to give money following a good voyage, the other detailing provisions;
    • SP 1/3: notebook containing psalms and part of a sailing journal;
    • SP 1/4: [not here].
  • Bundle 2, taken from the captain's pocket book, SP 2/1-SP 2/21 in French, Danish, Dutch, English and Latin:
    • SP 2/1-SP 2/13: two bills of lading, two certificates of the ship's weight, four ship's passes, instructions from the ship's owner, two customs papers, receipt for lighthouse dues, attestation given at Copenhagen as to the ship's ownership and voyage;
    • SP 2/14: [not here];
    • SP 2/15-SP 2/18: order from the ship's owner, muster roll, customs paper, ship's pass;
    • SP 2/19-SP 2/20: [not here];
    • SP 2/21: note relating to provisions;
    • SP 2/22: [not here].
  • Bundle 3, taken from the captain's pocket book, SP 3/1-SP 3/15 in Dutch and French:
    • SP 3/1-SP 3/3: three letters of recommendation for recipients in Ostend, Middelburg and London from the owners on behalf of Captain Laurensen;
    • SP 3/4-SP 3/6: receipt for wine, two notes on provisions and wages;
    • SP 3/7-SP 3/9: [not here];
    • SP 3/10-SP 3/15: three notes relating to prunes and medical treatment, receipt for provisions, surgeon's bill, licence.
  • Bundle 4, papers found loose on the ship, SP 4/1-SP 4/53 in Danish, Dutch and French:
    • SP 4/1-SP 4/10: song, two notes relating to the ship's lading, two bills, three draft letters to the ship's owners, accounts for a voyage to Courland, sailing instructions;
    • SP 4/11-4/19: agreement as to the ship's ownership, four personal and commercial letters, bill of lading, customs paper, sailing instructions, agreement for wages;
    • SP 4/20-SP 4/21: [not here];
    • SP 4/22-SP 4/39: eight letters relating to the captain's orders and conduct, eight sets of accounts, two receipts;
    • SP 4/40-SP 4/53: printed commission from the Danish consul at Bordeaux, two notes relating to wine and medical treatment, eleven receipts for cargo lading and port payments.
