Administrative / biographical background

The Home Office was responsible for the management of offenders under the National Offender Management Service (NOMS). The creation of the National Probation Service for England and Wales saw the formation of 42 local probation boards, established with Home Office funding for the probation service, and the creation the post of Director General within the Home Office.

The National Probation Directorate at Home Office consisted of the following areas: Directorate Corporate ManagementPerformance and Planning GroupPolicy GroupPublic Protection GroupInterventions and Processes GroupHuman Resources GroupInformation and Technology GroupFinance and Estates Group

Areas of work included setting up the Offender Assessment System (OASys) and coordinating cross-organisational meetings for the Centrally-Led Action Networks (CLANS).
