Description

Captured ship: Virgin of Peace otherwise Vierge de Paix of Dieppe (master Jean Binet otherwise John Binnet; prize master John Gertsen of Rotterdam, otherwise Jan Gerritsz, Jan Gersz).

History: a French merchant ship (70 tons), bound from La Rochelle to Barnstaple, laden with salt; taken about 7-8pm on 29 July/8 August 1673 close off Lands End by the Dutch privateer Flying Eagle otherwise Vliegende Arend of Rotterdam (Joost van der Goes commanding); retaken about 6pm on 31 July/10 August 1673 east of Portland by HMS Hatton ketch (Isaac White commanding), and brought into Portsmouth on 1/11 August 1673.

Court Papers, numbered CP 1-4:-

  • [CP 1]: two examinations taken at Portsmouth, 3 August 1673;
  • [CP 2]: certificate of claim of Christopher Hunt, 2 September 1673;
  • [CP 3]: associated bill of lading supplied to the Court;
  • [CP 3]: affadavit as to the leaky condition of the 'very old' ship, 9 September 1673.

Ships Papers, numbered SP 2-37:- 16 letters (mail in transit?) and 18 papers, an original file of ship's papers, letters, etc, numbered by the Court 2-37 (No 1 is wanting). Includes SP 37 copy of Willem III privateering commission issued aboard Vliegende Arend, 9 August 1673 by Joost van der Goes to Jan Gersz to command Vierge de Paix.

Extra information: See IND 1/9012 f.86v: ship condemned, but goods restored, 17 September 1673 (latter appealed 1 October 1673).
