Description

No 40.

Captured ship: St Jacob of Amsterdam (commander John Andriesen Trompetter).

Capture history: a Dutch privateer, taken on 11/21 Jan 1673/1674 off Sunderland (having a commission in Dutch in the name of the States General or Prince of Orange) by HMS Newcastle, John Wetwang commanding.

2 documents:-

  • Allegation of Wetwang, 30 May 1674: Wetwang had, about 48 hours before the capture, retaken an (unnamed) English prize of the same privateer, taken some hours previously. Mentions other papers found aboard, and now at the court. The Dutch commander and crew were set ashore at Newcastle, 'or some parts in Scotland', and the ship afterwards brought into Newcastle.
  • Enclosure: special interrogatories (incomplete, undated.)
