Description

Captured ship: St James, otherwise St Jacques of Bordeaux (master Jean Gaultier otherwise given as James Grotier, John Gautier).

History: a French merchant ship (40 tons); laden with French wines, brandy and prunes, rumoured to be a Dutch prize taken in Conquet Roads by the French; discovered on 7/17 December 1673 at Whirlpool Bay to the west of Rame Head, Cornwall, abandoned at anchor, in a dangerous condition with no boats and her sails struck on deck, and brought into Plymouth.

Court Papers, numbered CP 1-4:-

  • [CP 1]: affidavit as to papers, 12 January 1673/4;
  • [CP 2]: standing interrogatories and seven examinations at Plymouth, 12 January 1673/4;
  • [CP 3]: account of expenses in salvage of the ship, covering 7 December 1673-2 January 1673/4;
  • [CP 4]: Samuel Eastlake, account of expenses in salvage of ship.

Ships Papers numbered SP 1-5, all with NS dates (so equivalent English dates run 22 October-28 November 1673):-

  • [CP 5]: letter, 1 November 1673;
  • [CP 2]: invoice of cargo, 28 November 1673;
  • [CP 3]: bill of lading, 28 November 1673;
  • [CP 6]: letter from Messrs Sauvage to Chadock, 1 December 1673;
  • [CP 4]: letter from Messrs Sauvage to Chadock, 8 December 1673.
