Description

Captured ship: St Jacob [of Ostend] (master Michael Arensen Halse of Rotterdam, otherwise Mychgyel Hals).

(History: a Flemish (Spanish Netherlands) merchant ship (350 tons, 11-13 men, built in the Dutch Republic, bought at Amsterdam 15 months earlier), bound from Oleron to Ostend, laden with salt, wines, vinegar and goods; taken on 29 March/8 April 1672 between Plymouth and the Lizard by HMS Nonsuch (Thomas Legatt commanding) and brought into Plymouth the same day.

Documents:-

Court Papers, numbered CP 1-4 (examinations mention an attempt to bribe Legatt (like previous naval captors) to let them go as being Flemish not Dutch):-

  • [CP 1]: two examinations taken at Plymouth, 29 March 1672;
  • [CP 2]: three examinations taken at Plymouth, 29 March 1672;
  • [CP 3]: examination taken at Plymouth, 4 April 1672;
  • [CP 4]: certificate, 30 March [1672].

Extra information:-

  • owners were Hendrick van Kestell, and his brothers Jan Baptista van Kestell and Jacomo van Kestell, all of Antwerp (residents, respectively, of Bordeaux, Antwerp and Rotterdam); John van der Haga (otherwise Hagen) and Jan de Raedt, both residents of Ostend;
  • restored to 'Jachomo van Kessell and other subjects of Spain', 18 June 1672. See IND 1/ 9012, f.39.
  • 18 papers were brought in from the ship (see HCA 30/882, p.55), but these were probably restored.
