The Commission for Architecture and the Built Environment (CABE) was established in September 1999 as a non-departmental public body sponsored by the Department for Culture, Media and Sport (DCMS). CABE was made a statutory body by the Clean Neighbourhood and Environment Act 2005. CABE served as the government's statutory adviser on architecture, urban design and public space in England. Its remit was to influence and inspire the people making decisions about the built environment, working directly with architects, planners, designers and clients.
CABE was dissolved in 2011 and its responsibilities passed to the Design Council. In March 2015 responsibilities for residual matters arising from CABE passed from DCMS to the Department for Communities and Local Government (DCLG). This was part of the transfer of responsibility for architecture policy. This transfer did not include any responsibility for the historic built environment or for the Government Estate. Responsibility for promotion of British architecture overseas also remained with DCMS as part of their general responsibility for promoting the creative industries.
