ACOM stands for Active Communities and was the prefix of the Active Communities Unit of the Home Office (ACU). It was set up in 2002 and existed until 2006. The purpose of ACU was to promote and support all forms of voluntary activity and community involvement. Its main policy periodically re-branded, though the remit remained the same. It was first known as 'Make a Difference'. It later to changed to 'The Giving Age' and finally to 'Active Communities'.
