The creation of the Greater London Authority (GLA) in 2000 came about following a devolution of powers from central government under the terms of the Greater London Authority Act 1999. The GLA consists of two branches: the Mayor of London and the London Assembly. The GLA is responsible for the strategic administration of the Greater London area and works collaboratively with the 32 borough councils. It has power over transport, policing, fire and rescue, economic development and strategic planning.
