Description

Folios 76-96. Letter from the Earl of Buckingham to Lord Viscount Weymouth transmitting on the request to the Commander in Chief copies of six letters from him to Buckingham to be laid before the King such that he may be informed of what has been intended and proposed for the Defence of Ireland. The endorsements on the enclosures indicate what determinations have been made upon them. Buckingham additionally encloses a paper on proposed dispositions for the Army in Ireland. Dated at Dublin Castle. Enclosed: Folios 78-79: Paper entitled 'Periods proposed for the Encampment of the several Regiments of Infantry', dated 7-9 May 1778. Folios 80-81: Letter from the Commander in Chief to the Lord Lieutenant of Ireland, dated at the Royal Hospital on 28 March 1778, and proposing that the latter issue orders that each company in the several regiments of foot in Ireland be augmented as set out therein. Endorsement on the reverse indicates that this plan was approved and transmitted to Lord Weymouth on 6 April 1778. Folios 82-84: Paper from the Commander in Chief entitled 'Plan humbly proposed by the Commander in Chief for a Disposition of the Troops for the Defence of this Kingdom in case of an Invasion'. Dated at the Royal Hospital [Kilmainham] on 3 April 1778. Endorsement on the reverse indicates 'A new disposition made by forming two camps, one near Clonmell the other near Kinsale'. Folios 85-86: Letter from the Commander in Chief to the Lord Lieutenant of Ireland dated at the Royal Hospital on 3 April 1778 and stressing the absolute necessity that the financial requirements for military service be brought to the King's attention and that a letter be obtained from the King for up to £20,000 to be applied in such manner as the exigency of affairs may require, the Commander in Chief and General Officers being accountable for the sums issued upon their respective warrants. Endorsement on the reverse of the letter indicates that no application for a letter from the King is needed yet as the Vice Treasurer is willing to advance. Folios 87-88: Paper entitled 'The following hints are humbly submitted to the consideration of His Excellency the Lord Lieutenant by the Commander in Chief' regarding an augmentation to the Infantry in Ireland. Dated at the Royal Hospital on 27 March 1778. Endorsement on the reverse indicates that the plans of augmentation were approved and transmitted with estimates on 6 April 1778 for the King's approbation and orders issued in the meantime to proceed. Folios 89-92: Letter from the Commander in Chief to the Lord Lieutenant in Ireland, dated at the Royal Hospital on 1 April 1778, and proposing several orders to be issued relative to encampments and other military matters. Endorsement on reverse indicates 'everything herein desired was ordered'. Folios 93-94: Letter from the Commander in Chief to the Lord Lieutenant dated at the Royal Hospital on 3 April 1778, enclosing plan for the defence of Ireland in case of an Invasion and suggesting the Lord Lieutenant have letters written to the Magistrates, other gentlemen and other relevant persons on the coast of Munster and Connaught asking for them to give the earliest notice to him of the appearance of an enemy on the coast, of any suspected or suspicious persons lurking in the country, and of anything that may come to the notice that can tend to frustrate the designs of an enemy. Endorsement on reverse indicates that letters were sent and the orders desired were issued to the Revenue Officers. Folios 95-96: Letter from the Commander in Chief to the Lord Lieutenant, dated at the Royal Hospital on 4 April 1778, representing the need for an Engineer to be sent immediately to examine the Forts of Duncannon, Cork Harbour, and Charles Fort [Kinsale], so that the same may be put in the best possible state of defence. Further representations are made on the need to inspect camp stores and equipment so that everything necessary for the troops to take the field may be in perfect readiness. Endorsement on reverse indicates 'Forts of Duncannon &c to be put into a state of defence. This appears to be an extensive work according to Lt Col Vallancey's Report transmitted to Lord Weymouth'.
