Prisoner Name: Henry Casswell, aged 28.
Court and Date of Trial: Old Bailey, July 1848.
Crime: Sheepstealing. Stealing a sheep off Clapham Common, valued at twenty shillings.
Initial Sentence: Seven years transportation.
Outcome: Nil.
Petitions and letters: Petition from 39 neighbours of the prisoner, seeking mitigation of sentence. They attest to his previous good, respectable character, and his good behaviour during his two years imprisonment at Pentonville, and now Portland gaol. Before committing the offence, he suffered a serious accident, sustaining injuries which continue to cause him ill health, and contributing to his accruing bad debts.
