Prisoner Name: James Curran, aged 16.
Court and Date of Trial: Manchester Sessions,19 February 1848.
Crime: Stealing 18lbs of Cheese, valued at ten shillings, property of John Dearden, Mitchell Street, Ancoats.
Initial Sentence: Seven years transportation.
Gaoler's Report: ‘Before convicted’.
Outcome: Nil. Blenheim, for Van Diemen’s Land.
Petitions and letters: Copy of witness depositions. Petitions from the prisoner’s widowed mother to Sir George Grey, Lord John Russell, and Joseph Brotherton MP. Grounds for clemency: he is her only son; if sent abroad she won’t see him again; he was very young at time of offence [only 14 years old]; ‘it was only a piece of cheese’.
