Description

Folios 468-469: George Christopher Pulling, HMS Kangaroo, The Downs. He announces his arrival after escorting that part of the Mediterranean convoy bound for St George's Channel as ordered by Captain Richard Bridges of HMS Woolwich. He encloses a copy of those orders. He reports that he had to pick up fresh water supplies in Cork as they were short of water in Gibraltar. He then sailed on with all speed but off the Isle of Wight the weather was so bad that he was forced to stand offshore. He pressed on as soon as he could, so as to get to Spithead as ordered. Then when off Breachy Head the bad weather returned and as his sails are in a very poor state he though it prudent to stop in The Downs. He encloses a list of his ship's defects as he feels she is in need of docking. Not only has she hit the ground twice but giving the engagement at Oropeso, when the guns were fired for a long time, have shaken up her upper works, for all of this she needs attention.

Folio 470: enclosure with folios 468-469. Report dated December 1801, from Matthew Thomas, Carpenter to Captain George Christopher Pulling, HMS Kangaroo, Downs. He gives a detailed report both of incidents that have befallen the ship including the firing of her cannonades which have led to multiple defects on the vessel that are rendering her unserviceable. He also reports that the officers' cabins need repairs too. He recommends that she be docked.

Folio 471: enclosure with folios 468-469. Copy order dated 30 November 1801 from Captain Richard Bridges, HMS Woolwich at Sea to Captain George Christopher Pulling, HMS Kangaroo. He is ordered to escort a convoy up St Geroge's Channel, first hoisting the blue ensign to signal to them to join him if they are bound for Ireland, Bristol and Liverpool. They are to be given an opportunity to call into Milford Haven if the wind is against them. After completing this task he is to return immediately to Spithead and inform the Admiralty of his arrival and await their further orders.
