Description

Folios 98-99: Sandford Tatham, Greenock. Encloses the Minutes of the Proceedings of the Lieutenancy of Ayrshire held on 9th and 29th October 1806 to agree the quota of Fishermen and Boatmen who could be impressed into the Navy. Also describes at length which fishermen and boatmen would be exempt and his plans fo introducing similar measures in the other Maritime Counties of West Scotland. Asks for extra money in his accounts for the printing of exemption certificates.

Folio 100: enclosure with folios 98-99. Admiralty note, 11 November 1806. Suggested response to Sandford Tatham , giving approval of the steps he has taken provided the quota is taken only from Fishermen and not Seamen employed in the Merchant Service.

Folio 101: enclosure with folios 98-99. example of the proposed Exemption certificate for the Fisherman and Boatmen on the West Coast of Scotland.

Folios 102-103: enclosure with folios 98-99. Archibald Moore, Vice Lieutenant of Bute, Rothesay, 13 October 1806 to Sandford Tatham. Advising that as he has not received any instructions from the Secretary of State regarding the new Act of Parliament which authorised the Admiralty to demand a quota of men from the Fishermen of the area, he has delayed proceedings to implement such measures.

Folios 104-105: enclosure with folios 98-99. Hugh Montgomerie, Earl of Eglinton, Lord Lieutenant of Ayrshire, Ayr, 9 October 1806. Minutes of the Proceedings of the Lieutenancy of Ayrshire for the purpose of receiving from the Convenors of the different Subdivisions Amended lists of the Fishermen and Boatmen in the County. Those attending: Thomas Kennedy of Dunure; Peter Ballantine of Castlehill; John Hamilton of Sundnun; John Hamilton of Sundnim; Alexander Gardner of Trolorg; William Bowie of Cambriscan; John Boyle of Shewatton; William Kelso of Dankeith.

Folios 106-107: enclosure with folios 98-99. Hugh Montgomerie, Earl of Eglinton, Lord Lieutenant of Ayrshire, Ayr, 29 October 1806. Minutes of the Proceedings of the Lieutenancy of Ayrshire for the purpose of receiving from the Convenors of the different Subdivisions Amended lists of the Fishermen and Boatmen in the County. Contains the return of the number of persons in the County of Ayr from that cohort liable for or exempt from impressment. Folios 108-109: enclosure with folios 98-99. Regulations fixed at the General Meeting of the Lieutenancy of Ayrshire for the Men to be procured for HM Naval Service from the Fishers and Boatmen in that County.
