Description

Captured ship: St Bartholomew otherwise St Bartholomeus of Ostend, (master Jesper de Smedt of Ostend or Onschoten [Hondschoote] near Dunkirk, otherwise Jasper de Smidt or de Smit).

History: a Flemish (Spanish Netherlands) merchant ship (50-55 tons/40 lasts; owners Boudewyn van Bourne, otherwise Borm; Thomas Hamilton; Daniell Comens, otherwise Cammel; and Bartell Bondt, otherwise captain Bartholomeus Bondt, all residents of Ostend); previously a Dutch or Hamburg merchant ship, bought at Ostend about four months earlier), bound from Longsoundt [Langesund] in Norway to Waterford, Youghal and Belfast, Ireland, laden with deal boards; taken on 4/14 August 1672 about 3 leagues off Falmouth by HMS Morning Star ([Francis Reade] commanding), and brought into Plymouth.

  • [CP 1]: standing interrogatories (in name of James, Duke of York);
  • [CP 2]: standing interrogatories (in name of Charles II);
  • [CP 3]: examinations at Plymouth, 8 August 1672;
  • [CP 4]: examinations at Plymouth, 15 August 1672;
  • [CP 5]: copies of Ostend seabrief (18 May 1672) and affidavit on cargo (25 August 1672);
  • [CP 6]: (translations of the above).
