Prisoner name: Edward Chandler, aged 21.
Court and Date of Trial: Central Criminal Court, 1845.
Crime: Larceny.
Initial sentence: Transportation 7 years.
Gaoler's Report: Character not known.
Petitions and letters: Petition from the prisoner, stating that the charges were 'got up' by a woman he had been seeing for 4 years. In a fit of jealousy, the woman had gone to his Masters and friends, including W R Black, with whom the prisoner had been living in 1842. The case was dismissed, as it seemed unlikely the prisoner would rob someone to whom he had passed as a husband. Mr Black then brought a case against the prisoner which, the prisoner says, was wholly encouraged by his former 'wife'. The prisoner's friends were not in a position to help him get counsel on the day of the trial.
