The Office for Product Safety and Standards (OPSS) was created in 2018 within the Department for Business, Energy and Industrial Strategy (BEIS). It later became part of the Department for Business and Trade (DBT). The OPSS is tasked with product regulation to ensure people and places are protected from product-related harm. It fulfils this task by applying regulations to different stages of the lifecycle of product, from design and manufacture to end use and safe disposal. OPSS is also responsible for the Primary Authority, which was first administered by the Department for Business, Innovation and Skills (BIS). The remit of the OPSS does not include food, medicines and vehicles.
