Folios 451-452: William Sidney Smith, Bath. Reply to letter dated 30 May 1798 he states that he has no knowledge of any intention in Captain Bergeret to make his escape to France further that what may be supposed to Exist in the mind of any prisoner while under close confinement. General Rooke Commanding Officer of the District in which Stapleton prison is situated having the most unbounded consideration in the honour of Captain Bergeret from past experience did not hesitate to afford him an opportunity of conversing with him more at liberty that could be the case in crowded Prison. [Mentions:-] Mr Commissary Allard from the Transport Board.
