The records were managed under the successive direction of the Directorate of Military Survey (1943-1988), the Directorate of General Military Survey (1988-1991), the Military Survey Defence Agency (1991-2000), the Defence Geographic and Imagery Intelligence Agency (2000-2002), the Defence Geospatial Intelligence (2002-2006), the Intelligence Collection Group (2006-2012), the Joint Forces Intelligence Group (2012-2016) and the National Centre for Geospatial Intelligence (2016 onwards). These records were created by the directorates' production elements, successively by the Survey Production Centre Royal Engineers (1962-1970), the Mapping and Charting Establishment Royal Engineers (1970-1991), Production/Services Division (1991-1999) and the Defence Geographic Centre (1999 onwards). These sub-units were and are responsible for the compilation, reproduction and distribution of topographic maps for UK land forces and topographic air charts for UK air forces in printed and digital form in support of strategic to tactical decision-making for planning, training and operational purposes.
