Description

3 sheets of the Ordnance Survey six-inch County Series joined: parts of [Devon CXVII-CXVIII] and [Devon CXXIV], together covering the area between Fancy Wood, the Laira and King's Tamerton. Scale: 6 inches to 1 mile. All of the marginalia, including details of survey and production have been trimmed away. A piece if tracing cloth, bearing, in manuscript, a south-eastward extension, has been affixed to the face of the map. Manuscript title: 'Plan shewing the ground required to be contoured for the line of the North Eastern Defences Plymouth proposed in May 1861': Manuscript additions, coloured, reflecting this title, and marking out a grid to form an index to the sheetlines of the Ordnance Survey 1:2,500 County Series. Signed by Captain E F DuCane, Royal Engineers, 26 June 1861, and by William F Drummond Jervois, Assistant Inspector General of Fortifications, 29 July 1861. An additional note on contouring and scale is signed by Captain A de Courcey Scott, Royal Engineers, 13 February 1862.
