Folios 9-10: Thomas Manby, HMS Africaine, Downs. Writes that he has just heard of the death of one of his relations in Norfolk and as he has been left a property he needs to go and sign the papers. Asks for 3 days leave, preferably 5. However, he realises this is a 'momentous' time and should he and his ship be required immediately he will sacrifice his own interests. Notes that all the sick were landed from the Africaine except two who were too ill to be moved, and one has since died - they are whitewashing the ship and will fumigate her as recommended by Sir Carmichael Smith. He also notes that there are at present insufficient ships to form a court martial, so he requests a 'telegraphic reply' to ensure a quicker return to his station.
