Folios 274-275: Augustus Montgomery, HMS Inconstant, Smyrna Bay. Advises he was ordered by Admiral Lord Hood to take under his command HMS Romney, HMS Leda and HMS Tartar and proceed with any trade ships bound for the Levant. Advises he sailed from Naples Bay on 1 June with 1 English merchantmen and 7 Dutch merchantmen and arrived safely on 22 June. Advises he received information off the Island of Argentierra that the French Commodore had been seen off the Islands of Tino and Miconi conveying 3 merchantmen and immediately directed Captain Paget to remain with the convoy and made sail with HMS Leda and HMS Tartar before they could reach the Island of [Seio?]. With no appearance of the enemy he went to rejoin the convoy and was then informed by the Master of the Mercury Smyrna of what Captain Paget had discovered. He left the convoy under the care of Captain Freemantle, HMS Tartar and with HMS Leda made sail to Miconi Bay and found Captain Paget in possession of La Sybille and 3 merchantmen as described in the enclosed letter. He lauds Captain Paget's actions and the praise he bestows on Lieutenant Brisbane and his other Officers. Advises that the Island of Miconi is defenceless without a fort, flag or a Turkish inhabitant. Advises that HMS Romney, HMS Tartar with La Sybille have arrived at Smyrna Bay. Advises that the French have La Sensible and Le Rossignol lying at Fogia Nova where he chased them on entering the Gulf of Smyrna and released the Canada merchantman that had been blocked up there. Advises he also brought the Hunter merchantman from Scio and the Hampden joined HMS Tartar passing by that port. La Sardine a French corvette is now at anchor at this port and intelligence has been received that La Capricieux is shortly expected in these seas coming from Toulon. Advises he proposes to sail with the convoy for Gibraltar at the end of July.
Folios 276-277: enclosed with folios 274-275. Letter dated 18 June 1794 by Captain William Paget, HMS Romney, Miconi Bay to Captain Augustus Montgomery, HMS Inconstant. Reports that on his passage in HMS Romney between the Islands of Tino and Miconi with the convoy he discovered a frigate with 3 merchantmen. He instructed the convoy to make their way to Captain Augustus Montgomery's ship and then anchored in Miconi Roads near the French Commodore. He signalled her to surrender or he would fire, but the response was that he would never strike his colours. The French Commodore placed his ship between Miconi and HMS Romney so he anchored and then gave him a broadside which was returned . The action lasted for 1 hour and 10 minutes at which point the French hauled down his national colours. The ship proved to be La Sybille commanded by Commodore Rondeau. He has sent First Lieutenant Brisbane on board her to take command. He recommends Lieutenant Brisbane particularly along with Lieutenants Field and O'Bryen and Mr. Patterson, Master. Advises of casualties on both sides including the French Second Lieutenant and French Captain of Marines.
