Description

Folios: 142v-143v. Bedfordshire. Inquisition.

Place or subject: An inquisition taken by pretext of a writ of diem clausit extremum of Edward I, and returned into his Chancery in the twentieth year of his reign, concerning the lands and tenements formerly of Christiana la Latymere in Northamptonshire. The jurors say upon their oath that Christiana held the manor of Wardon [Chipping Warden] of the king in chief by the service of two and a half knights' fees. The chief messuage with garden and dovecote is worth 6s 8d a year. They also say that there are 430 acres of arable land there in demesne and they are worth £12 15s per annum, the price of an acrebeing 6d. Sum £12 15s. There are there ten acres of mowable meadow worth per annum 30s, the price of an acre being 3s. Also one pasture called le Doune worth per annum 20s, namely between the feast of the Ascension and Michaelmas. They are there two watermills worth per annum 60s. Rents of assize of freeholders from Easter term are worth 20s 3d, and from Michaelmas term 20s 3d. Sum 40s 6d. Rents of customary tenements of seventeen yardlands are worth £17, payable at the Christmas, the Annunciation, the Nativity of St John the Baptist and Michaelmas by equal portions. Rents of cottars at the same terms are worth 12s. The customary tenants render thrity-three capons at these four terms, the price of a capon being 2d. Sum 5s 6d. Each yardland which the customary tenants hold will plough at three seasons of the year six acres, the price of an acre 4d. Sum 17s. They will also mow ten acres of meadow or they willl give for the mowing 40d. Sum 3s 4d. They hold seventeen yardlands, each of them is to reap the lord's corn or will give 2s. Sum 2s 10d. The perquisites of courts are worth 20s a year. Sum 60s. Sum total £42 12s 10d. Christiana held the manor of Braybroc [Braybrooke] of the abbot of Combe in chief and of the abbot of Pipewelle [Pipewell] by the service of a fourth part of one knight's fee. The chief messuage with garden is worth 6s 8d a year. They also say that there are 160 acres of arable land in demesne worth £4 per annum, the price of an acre being 6d. Sum £4. There are also four acres of mowable meadow worth 12s per annum, the price of an acre being 3s. Sum 12s. From the rents of assize of both freeholders and eight customary tenants at those four terms £5. The perquisites of courts are worth 3s per annum. Sum total £10 20d. They also say that Christiana holds in Little Boudon [Little Bowden] 27s 9d of annual rent of the abbot of Pipewell], paying him one pound of pepper, and he receives that rent at those four main terms. Sum 27s 9d. They also say that Christiana held in Rothwell of G. earl of Gloucester [Gilbert de Clare] £10 of annual rent in chief by the service of half a knight's fee, to be received at the four main terms. Sum £10. She also held in Ristone [Rushton] of the inheritance of William de Goldyngham, by the service of half a pound of pepper and half a pound of cumin, 25s of annual rent, to be received at those four main terms. Sum 25s. She also held in Desbur' [Desborough] of Robert Basset, by the service of one pound of cumin and to the aid of the castle of Beuver [Belvoir] 12d from the rent of assize of freeholders, 13s 8d. From the rent of assize of six customary tenants holding six yardlands 48s, from each of them 8s. Sum 61s 8d. She also held in Corby a moiety of the vill with 12s 3d of annual rent of freeholders in Carlton [East Carlton] of the king in chief, paying £5 annually at the Exchequer. She also had in Corby from the rent of assize of customary tenenants six and a half yardlands at the four main terms, £6 10s. From the rent of cottars at the same terms £4 10s. Perquisites of courts are worth 3s a year. Christiana also held in Weldon of Richard Basset 16s of annual rent, paying him at Easter one pair of gilt spurs. Sum total £28 5s 8d. Sum of sums £80 19s 2d. The jurors say that Thomas Latymer, son of Christiana, is her next heir and is aged twenty years and more.
