Folios 284-287. Copy of a letter from the King of France to d'Avaux [ [Jean-Antoine de Mesmes, called d'Avaux (1640-1709)?]. Surmising that the Allies wish the King of Sweden to believe that they will obtain more favourable conditions from him by dealing in Holland than by his mediation. The Emperor's envoy at The Hague has declared that his master wishes to put negotiations back in the hands of the King of Sweden, but the associated conditions make it clear that the Viennese Court only wishes to put off the peace (they will accept the Swedish King's mediation only if the French King declare the Treaties of Westphalia and Nijmegen be wholly reestablished as well as the 'recez de Nurenberg', and Lorraine is return without restrictions). Explains his position regarding keeping/offering equivalents for Luxembourg and Strasbourg. Refers to two pensions being paid which should 'excite' the recipients to express their good intentions. Praises d'Avaux for warning Polignac of the negotiations that 'Prince Jacques' [James Louis Henry Sobieski?] is undertaking in Stockholm, but does not believe that the King of Sweden would wish to engaged and provide the assistance sought on so weak a foundation.
